Replying To Doylerwex: "We competed in both a and b level at each grade didn't we?" Sorry, as in only the B teams were competitive in u-15 & u-16, A's teams were not near it?

Replying To Viking66: "I went up to Ferns and watched our u16As lose to Waterford in the Michael Foley Cup A final after beating Tipp in the SF. We were level when there was a melee and the ref sent off one of our lads but noone from Waterford. Waterford lost last years u15 Arrabawn A final and are a good team, although we beat them in a challenge game earlier this year. Our u15As won the U15A Arrabawn Shield, they only lost one "championship" game all year, to Cork. And our u14As reached the Tony Forristal A final for the 1st time since 2011, we were level at the end of normal time but Kilkenny scored a couple of frees in injury time to win it. All in all we had a very positive end to our intercounty underage season! Our u15s, u16s and minors should all be pretty competitive next year. Our u16s looked to be a better team than our minors this year!" Thanks for the update on Wexford underage teams, green shoots? Being competitive is the key at underage, and we need teams to have a few stars. Remember this Offaly team was spoken about since Tony Forristal days.

On the topic of championship structure, if you want more jeopardy in these games maybe an AFL style knock-out stage is needed. Basically, the top teams play each other with the loser playing the winners of further down. So in Wexford Championship, finals would look like
Week 1: 5th v 6th in each group 3rd v 4th in each group
Week 2: 1st v 2nd in each group (Winners : through to county semi finals) - Game A Winners 3rd/4th v 5th/6th - Game B
Week 3: Losers Game A v Winners Game B
Week 4: County semi finals.
Big advantage here is there is a big incentive to finish in top two - get a week off before county semi final if you win, and you get a 2nd chance if you lose. So finishing in the top 2 has huge advantages.
My own opinion from my playing days I feel no team finishing 6th in a 6 team group has any place still being in the championship. Relegation finals are awful things to play in but if you end up 6th in a group, that is the only game you deserve to play after that.

@StoreysTash - interesting idea about the second chance for teams who finish first and second, and I like it in principle.
However, an immediate potential difficulty is a calendar-based one, as it would need an extra round of matches, and therefore push the whole thing out to ten rounds from the nine it is now, and the eight that it used to be.
And if football pushed for the same structure, as they surely would, then it would ultimately push the whole thing out to 20 rounds of matches instead of the 16 that we had up to this year.
No way of doing that and still being ready for Leinster unless there was a raft of midweek games in the early stages, which nobody seems to have an appetite for. And would be even more difficult if our championships couldn't start until later than they did this year, e.g. if Wexford reached an All-Ireland Hurling semi-final, or a Tailteann Cup Final.

Waterford reached last years u15A Arrabawn final, so would be one of the best teams at the grade. It was an even enough game up until there was a melee, after which we had a lad sent off while Waterford didn't, but should have also. There were no linesmen to help the ref. Playing 2 1 hour games in 3 hours meant we just didn't have the energy left to compete with 14 men for the remainder of the half. U15As won the Arrabawn Shield, which I suppose means they finished 5th. Tipp were better than e eryone else at u15 this year, there would be nothing between us and the other 3 counties who contested the Arrabawn Cup semifinals. And our u14As reached the Tony Forristal Final, where they were level with Kilkenny coming into injury time. We were one of the best counties at A level at u14, u15 and u16.

That's the Michael Foley A Cup Final our u16As reached the Final of Countyman2022. They beat Tipp in the SF, while Waterford beat Cork in the other semifinal. Think Kilkenny won the Shield.
