Cork held on for an opening win over Clare in Group Three of the All-Ireland senior football championship this evening.

It finished 1-13 to 1-11 at Cusack Park, Ennis, where late points from Steven Sherlock and Mark Cronin served to ensure that the Rebels got over the line against their fellow Munster men.

The visitors had been 0-3 to 0-1 up the opening 10 minutes and things got better when Sean Powter crashed in their goal some six minutes later to put them on their way towards a 1-6 to 0-4 half-time lead.

Clare were superb in the early stages of the second-half though, sending over points via Daniel Walsh prior to Aaron Griffin hitting the Cork net in the 43rd minute.

The Lisscasey clubman’s major made it a one-point game and the Banner men would level it nine minutes later. The points of Tommy Walsh and Sherlock steadied Cork’s ship after that and they’d do enough for a crucial opening win despite a late push from Mark Fitzgerald’s charges.
