Joe Canning was quick to play down his superb match-winning point which sent Galway through to their third All-Ireland SHC final in six seasons.

The modest Portumna sharpshooter answered his critics with a stunning second half display and a haul of 0-11 as just a point separated Galway and Tipperary at the penultimate stage for the third year-in-a-row.

"It's just lucky it went over. I remember a couple of years ago against Waterford I'd the same to draw the match and I missed it, so it's nice when it comes off on a day like today," a breathless Canning told RTE immediately after the final whistle.

"Over the last three years, it's been nip and tuck, only a point in it, so it's good to come out on the right side of this year anyway. The hop of the ball went our way today; it went theirs last year."

Canning described Galway's defensive display as 'brilliant'.

He said: "The boys were unreal there today. That Tipp forward line is among the best around. To nullify them as much as we could, we did very well."
