National - Mayo 2017 - a troid too far?

Replying To GreenandRed:  "So is Mayo club football, it's still club football. Varley's had plenty of chances to show he's up to intercounty standard.

I don't know what's happened Akram, may be focussing on his studies? Even as a minor he looked a good prospect. Hopefully he'll get a chance in the future if he wants it."
When I saw Akram I thought he could be Mayo's version of Jack McCaffery.
He has pace to burn.
I think it is something like that Mayo need to inject a bit of vibrancy.
They are so close to going from a very good team to an excellent team.

In fairness to the battle scarred Mayo players I don't know how they pick themselves up year after year, and start again.
They deserve credit for that on it's own,

It'd be fair to say Mayo gave no hint of anything yesterday for the future season ahead, or at least I hope they didn't. If they really want to go through the front door this year it's going to take a huge leap forward to get the better of Galway. A game plan will surely be required at the very least. As things stand Galway would have no difficulty coping with a performance like yesterday's. All SG pundits last night were only talking Dublin and Kerry and it's hard to disagree with them.

surely big Danny Kirby is an addition to the team. Great fielder and can take a score. Paddy Durkin has improved a lot and so has what's his name.

Another view. Over-optimistic I think but we'll see as this season unfolds.

I agree with most of your point however the line about it been year 1 under Roachford I disagree with. Mayo have a great team, stars all over the pitch, you would expect them to get to finals etc. The all Ireland is what Mayo are aiming for, anything else would be deemed a failure.
When Harte came to Tyrone he bought a team that was beat by Sligo the previous year to the all Ireland the next year. Jim McGuiness again bought a failing team with massive discipline problems to Ulster titles and all Irelands. Yes positives to take but this team is on the clock and an all Ireland is needed soon or Roachford is gone."
I think it's a different kettle of fish for Mayo mate, I've been to many finals with them and the hope, hunger, belief and desire is huge. I think that atmosphere must be stifling for the group. For any other county I agree with you. But there is over 60 years of pressure on there lads shoulders. The narrative they have to deal with is like nothing ever befor seen in the game. I expierenced it in 2011and that was only 16 years. It makes such a difference not having that weight of expectation.

I really believe that if Mayo look on the Rochforrd reign and focus on the micro or that process rather then a 60 year macro it will be positive for them, Mayo have demons others counties don't have to contend with.

The sum of the the individual parts of this Mayo team is probably better than any other team in the country. The two O Connors, POTY Lee Keegan, Keith Higgins, Andy Moran and the 3 O'Shea's would probably start on nearly every other team in the country (except Dublin but they would be an addition to them) for their football talents. But there is something seriously wrong when these players cant combine together to deliver an All Ireland, this year is probably their last chance. I personally think there is a cuteness missing from Mayo footballers. If you listen to Matt Copper on a Friday evening you might understand what I mean. The football contributors of Peter Canavan & Senan Connell spend most of their time talking up the opposition and while trying to talk down the prospects of their own county team. Then David Brady or Martin Carney give their own opinion and they take the other approach of bigging up Mayo and making digs at whoever Mayo are playing against. I know a team taking to the field need to be positive and believe in their ability but this needs to be done in the correct manor which doesn't seem to be in the Mayo intellect.

Lads out of all the teams that Dublin have played the last few years Mayo are the one team that always give us a game that goes down to the wire, apart from the league match this year there's always only a point or two in it and I don't think this year will be any different. Kerry will be a threat to us this year also and Andy Mc Entee or no Andy Mc Entee Dublin will steamroll Meath as per usual so I think Mayo will be in the mix come August /September and are capable of beating Dublin or Kerry on their day but I still expect to be in O Connell St the night after the All Ireland football final toasting the Dubs for achieving the three in a row!

I don't think this will be our year simply because to win it we would probably have to beat both Kerry and Dublin. I can only remember us beating Kerry once in championship and we haven't beaten the Dubs in the last ten or twelve meetings. Now I know we are capable of beating either of them on any given day but to beat both of them in the one year........ I don't think so.

Of all the years Mayo came close last year was the one they could have won, I think the player power issue that may have resulted in the change of goalkeeper is very corrosive in a squad, it may not matter against the likes of Sligo but when the big games are there to be won Mayo seem to crack,
I can see Kerry coming strong this year and I thin they offer the biggest challenge to Dublin, everyone else will be also rans this year and for the next few years also in my opinion,
if I was having a bet my money would be on Kerry this year.

Well, will Liam Hayes's annual prediction finally come to pass, or is there any chance Mayo can regroup without the likelihood of a soft enough draw in the qualfiers? Or will last year's experiences stand to the squad?

Maybe its all in the plan. they could get dublin in the quarters minus the services of Diarmuid Connolly.

They need to avoid a Donegal/Tryone tie. Should beat the rest, although depends on the spirit of the team. So far they have not looked quite right. Their best players still seem to be defenders. Really need a couple of forwards , like COC , to step up and dominate a game.

They cant get Dublin until a potential final.

they are on separate sides of the draw

Hadn't checked that out Wayno, thanks. So we're still in the Connacht/Munster side of things, which means that if we make it to a QF, we'll be facing either Kerry/Cork or Galway/Rossies. Must check out the potential next opponents, though I know Donegal, Tyrone, and Meath have been mentioned. Nothing easy unless we're blessed, which we generally aren't given a choice.
